CPO vs. Used Cars: Which One Should You Buy?

Shopping for a car can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to decode industry jargon. Two terms you'll encounter often are "used" and "certified pre-owned" (CPO). While both refer to previously owned vehicles, they’re not the same thing. Understanding the differences, and how Beaverton Honda approaches both, can help you make a smarter, more confident purchase decision.

Let’s break down what sets these two options apart and which might be the better fit for your needs.

What Is a Used Car?

A used car is any vehicle that’s had at least one previous owner. While the condition, mileage, and history can vary, Beaverton Honda holds every used vehicle to high standards before it ever reaches our lot.

Each used car we sell goes through a 160-point inspection to ensure it meets our quality and safety expectations. If a vehicle doesn’t meet our criteria, it’s not offered for sale; we wholesale it instead. Many of our used vehicles also qualify for the Lanphere Cares Warranty, which provides 6 months or 6,000 miles of coverage for additional peace of mind.

So, when you shop used with Beaverton Honda, you’re not just getting a previously owned vehicle; you’re getting one that’s been thoroughly vetted, reconditioned, and backed by warranty protection.

What Is a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Vehicle?

A CPO vehicle is a late-model used car that’s been inspected, reconditioned, and certified by the manufacturer, not the dealership. To qualify, a car must meet stricter standards than a typical used vehicle.

For example, the Honda Certified Pre-Owned Program only accepts vehicles that are one-owner, accident-free, and in exceptional condition. Each one must pass a rigorous 182-point inspection and meet Honda’s strict age and mileage limits. Once certified, these vehicles are backed by Honda’s manufacturer warranty and include additional benefits like roadside assistance and special financing rates.

In short, a CPO vehicle gives you the experience of buying a nearly new car, complete with manufacturer backing, but at a more affordable price.

Key Differences Between CPO and Used Cars

Inspection and Certification

Every vehicle at Beaverton Honda is inspected, but the certification process differs.

CPO vehicles must meet the manufacturer’s strict criteria, including accident-free history, limited ownership, and excellent condition.

Used vehicles at Beaverton Honda undergo a 160-point inspection by our technicians. Those that pass are reconditioned to our high standards, and many qualify for our Lanphere Cares Warranty, offering added protection and confidence.

Warranty Coverage

CPO vehicles include an extended manufacturer-backed warranty, which continues beyond the original factory coverage. Beaverton Honda’s Lanphere certified used cars are also protected, offering 6 months/6,000 miles of warranty coverage, so you can buy with peace of mind no matter which route you take.

Vehicle History and Condition

Both CPO and Lanphere certified used vehicles come with a detailed vehicle history report for transparency. While CPOs must be one-owner, accident-free vehicles with like-new condition, our used cars may have had multiple owners or minor cosmetic repairs, but all have been carefully inspected, reconditioned, and verified for safety and reliability through our in-house reconditioning facility.
